Stop guessing your way through practice.

The Practice Lab is private 1-on-1 coaching to rebuild how you practice, so the hours you spend at the piano finally turn into the progress you’re after.

You're putting in the hours. So why does it feel like you're stuck?

❌ You practice regularly, but progress feels painfully slow — like you’re working hard and getting nowhere

❌ You sit down at the piano and aren’t fully sure what you should be doing, so you just… run through your pieces and hope for the best

❌ You repeat the hard sections over and over, but they don’t actually get better

❌ You’ve heard that practicing “effectively” matters, but nobody’s ever shown you how

I’ve got you

It's not that you're lazy or untalented.

It’s just that no one ever taught you how to practice.

We’re handed pieces and told to go practice them, as if the how is obvious. It isn’t. Effective practice is a skill of its own — entirely separate from playing ability — and it’s the single biggest thing standing between the hours you put in and the progress you want.

I know, because I lived it. I spent years practicing hours a day with little to show for it, staring at my music wondering what I was actually supposed to do. It nearly broke me in the weeks before my biggest performances. (More on that in a minute.)

The good news? Practicing well is learnable, and once you learn it, everything changes: you stop grinding and start genuinely improving.

Here's how we rebuild your practice together:

The Practice Lab isn’t a course you work through alone. It’s a private, guided process — just you and me — spread across a timespan designed to fit your life. Here’s the path:

01

YOUR PRACTICE DIAGNOSIS

The work starts before we ever meet. You’ll fill out a detailed questionnaire about how you currently practice: your routines, your frustrations, and what you’re working toward. This is how I get to know exactly where you’re stuck before we spend a single minute together.

02

RECEIVE YOUR TARGETED READING

Based on your answers, I send you readings hand-picked for your situation — not generic tips, but the specific practice principles that address what’s holding you back. You’ll arrive at our first session already thinking about practice differently.

03

SESSION ONE: HANDS ON

In our first hour together, we take what you’ve read and apply it directly to the pieces you’re working on right now. You leave with concrete changes to test at the piano — and within 24 hours, a new round of readings chosen based on what we uncovered.

04

SESSION TWO: REFINING

One to four weeks later, we reconvene to see what’s clicking and what still needs attention. We troubleshoot the sticking points, double down on what’s working, and keep sharpening your approach — followed, again, by targeted readings within 24 hours.

05

STRATEGY SESSION

This is the heart of the Lab. In an extended deep-dive, we zoom out and build your personalized practice blueprint — a mid- and long-term system for how you’ll practice, progress, and keep growing long after our work ends. This is what makes the results last.

06

THE FINAL SESSION: POLISHING

After you’ve lived with your new system, we come together one last time to troubleshoot, polish, and lock everything in. You walk away confident and fully self-sufficient — with a way of practicing that gives you the confidence to progress on your own.

By the end, you won’t just be practicing differently. You’ll understand how effective practice works, so you can keep applying it to every piece and every goal moving forward.

What it's like to learn with Robyn

These pianists came to me through lessons and my courses — here’s what working with me has done for their playing.

"Robyn has an incredible talent for identifying exactly what my daughter needs to work on… She teaches not just what to practice, but how to practice effectively—making even the less fun parts of learning more purposeful and rewarding. Her genuine love for the piano shines through in everything she does."
Jennifer
"Robyn has made me realize that pieces I only dreamed about playing can be accomplished with determination, hard work, and guidance. She is very knowledgeable and gives excellent feedback to make my dream of playing classical pieces come true."

Why I built The Practice Lab

A lot of practice advice is either useless or actively wrong.

“Made a mistake? Play it perfectly nine times to cancel it out.” “Always play the piece exactly the same way.” I’ve heard it all, and after more than a decade of testing what actually works, I can tell you most of it will keep you stuck (and bored).

I know, because I was stuck for years myself. Through my entire piano performance degree, my “strategy” was to run through my pieces over and over and hope. It sort of worked, at enormous cost — until I finally learned the thing no one had ever taught me: how to break a piece into steps far tinier than I’d ever realized I needed, and exactly what that process should look like. Suddenly, the panic wasn’t necessary anymore.

The difference was staggering. Music that used to take me a month, I could now learn in a week. Twice after my degree, I had to prepare full recital programs with singers in under two weeks — while working full-time — and I pulled it off, calmly, because I finally knew how to practice.

Then I started teaching it. For over a decade I’ve tested and refined this with my own students — and the results still surprise me. I have a student who practices 10 to 15 minutes a day (which is basically nothing!), and still steadily learns her music, because she practices the way I teach. That’s the whole secret: my students almost all practice far less than I used to, and make progress anyway — because how you practice matters more than how much.

You could try to piece this together yourself. I did — for years, turning scattered research and the habits of great pianists into something that actually works. But that took me the better part of a decade of trial and error. The Practice Lab is that decade, distilled: I can now look at how someone practices and quickly spot exactly what’s holding them back. That’s what you’re getting — not a book, not a course you do alone, but me, diagnosing your practice and rebuilding it with you.

My commitment to you

I won’t promise you’ll wake up a concert pianist — no honest teacher would. But here’s what I will promise.

This is the most personal work I do. When you join The Practice Lab, you get my most concentrated work. I’ll dig into how you actually practice, help you diagnose what’s holding you back, and build a plan around your real life, goals, and the time you actually have.

You won’t be handed a generic method and left to figure it out on your own. You’ll have someone in your corner who has spent over a decade learning how to make practice work, focused entirely on making it work for you.

That’s my promise: my full attention, my honest guidance, and a practice approach that gives you freedom and confidence at the piano.

Is The Practice Lab right for you?

This is for you if…

✓You practice regularly, but your progress doesn’t reflect the hours you put in

✓ You sit down at the piano and aren’t quite sure what you should be doing

✓ You want to understand how to practice, not just be handed more pieces

✓ You’re building toward the long game — real, lasting skill, not a quick fix

✓ You’re ready to actually change how you work at the piano (and do the work between sessions)

It's probably not the right fit if…

❌ You’re a complete beginner who’s never played (you’ll want some basics under your fingers first)

❌ You want someone to hand you repertoire and corrections rather than rebuild your process

❌  You’re hoping for a shortcut that skips the effort — the Lab makes your practice work, but you still have to show up

❌  You’re not prepared to complete the selected readings between sessions

Questions, Answered

You’re in the driver’s seat. Sessions are scheduled individually, at least one week apart (so you have time to actually apply what we work on) and no more than six weeks apart (so we keep our momentum). Most people land somewhere in between, at whatever rhythm fits their life.

Anywhere from about four weeks to six months, depending on the pace you choose. If you’d like to move quickly and meet once per week, we can; if life is full and you need more breathing room between sessions, that works too. The Lab flexes around your schedule, not the other way around.

You should be comfortable finding your way around the keyboard and playing pieces, even simple ones — this isn’t an absolute-beginner program. Beyond that, level matters far less than you’d think, because the Lab isn’t about what you play. It’s about how you practice, and better practice helps a pianist at almost any stage.

We start by pinpointing how you currently practice and what is holding you back. From there, we rebuild your approach piece by piece — testing things out in real time, adjusting, and connecting each change to the music you’re actually working on. By the strategy session, we zoom out to build your long-term plan, and the final session locks everything in so you can carry on confidently without me.

More than a decade of testing what actually works — with my own playing and with hundreds of hours teaching students. I draw on how the world’s best pianists approach the instrument and on current research into how we learn and build skill, but the real value is that I’ve already done the messy work of turning all of that into a tested, practical system. You don’t have to piece it together yourself. I’ve done that part.

Life happens, and the Lab is built to bend. Because you can space sessions up to six weeks apart, there’s plenty of room to breathe if things get busy. If you need to pause, just talk to me — we’ll find a way to make it work.

You already know how this feels

You know what it’s like to put in the hours and not see them add up. To sit down at the piano a little unsure of what you’re even supposed to be doing. To wonder whether you’re just missing something everyone else seems to have figured out.

You’re not missing talent. You were just never taught how to practice, and that is an entirely fixable thing.

I spent years stuck exactly where you might be right now, convinced that I was the problem. I wasn’t. And once I learned to practice with intention instead of frantic desperation, everything changed — I went from dreading new music to learning in a week what used to take me a month. That’s what I want to hand you: not another method to figure out alone, but me, in your corner, rebuilding your practice with you.

There are only five founding spots, and this is the lowest the Practice Lab will ever be. If something in you has been nodding along this whole time — that’s worth listening to.

Let’s rebuild how you practice, together.
